Almost 40% of Australian retailers fail to meet online consumer needs

Currently 38% of Australian retailers are “laggards” in conducting online commerce, specifically in the area of customer engagement.

Despite 50% of Australian consumers preferring to shop online, only Australian electronics companies are keeping pace with international firm online strategy, while sectors such as hardware, furniture and food fall behind.

Researchers from the University of Sydney suggest local retailers also fail to engage with customers through channels such as social media, lagging behind by 33% compared to international retailers. Furthermore, if the gap online between the retailer and consumer becomes greater, more Australians will switch from local to overseas suppliers and brands.
