Analysis of ant olfactory system

A study that mapped the chemical receptors of two different ant species has revealed a large and varied system of chemical receptors.

Ants have up to five times more odour receptors than other insects. The chemical signals detected by these receptors dictate interactions between individuals and groups of ants.

Scientists found differences across two ant species, indicating the receptors are attuned to their environments.
