Ants eyeing down their local housing market

Colonies of rock ants are constantly searching for the most ideal homes in order to continue the safety and productivity of the Queen mother and her offspring.

PhD students from Bristol’s School of Biological Sciences found these ants are frequently confronted with dilemmas of whether to move to better homes, or to stay, depending on the condition of their current home.

More effort is put into finding new homes when their current one is becoming rundown, and they search much less when they have acquired the perfect home.
