Are we headed for a disability benefit blowout?

Research from the University of Melbourne suggests Australia may be one economic downturn away from a disability benefit blowout.

Use of the Disability Support Pension (DSP) has been growing rapidly due to Australia’s ageing and growing population. Changes to the New Start allowance and Parenting Payment have meant the DSP is easier to access and more generous than other welfare payments.

Increasing unemployment can trigger large numbers of unemployed older employers seeking DSP, leading to a large pool of DSP recipients exceeding the budget if the DSP is not reformed.
