Description

Alleviating poverty through entrepreneurship: ‘Western’ vs ‘Indigenous’ models of entrepreneurship

Poverty is a complex, global challenge and though steady progress has been made, far too many people still exist on or below the official poverty line of US$1.90/day. Even if this figure is raised to just $3.20 per day, nearly 60 per cent of people in the world live in poverty.

Foreign aid does help; but in recent times an enthusiasm for Western-style entrepreneurship has attempted to replicate the Silicon Valley dream. How effective has this really been? Are policymakers, researchers and even entrepreneurs themselves overlooking the benefits of ’homegrown’ knowledge?

In this Masterclass, Professor Garry Bruton, a leading researcher in entrepreneurial strategy from Neeley School of Business at TCU, Texas, together with Professor David Gilbert, Director of Entrepreneurship at Monash Business School, will examine ‘western’ vs ‘indigenous’ models of entrepreneurship in alleviating poverty.
