Australian-native Lyrebirds pros in mimicry

Lyrebirds are some of the most proficient when it comes to imitating other bird species’ calls and songs.

Grey Shrike-Thrush song imitations were recorded and played to the thrushes, with the result that they could not tell the difference between the Lyrebird’s call and the call of their own kind.

It is unclear why the birds have developed this special skill, but it is something the birds learn, it is not a practice they are born equipped with.
