Australians did not gamble away carbon tax cheques

Australians hoarded their carbon tax compensation payments in 2012 in contrast to the increase in expenditure at the pokies following the economic stimulus payments of 2008 and 2009.

The Melbourne Institute study found that people viewed the carbon tax payments differently to the stimulus cheques because they were portrayed as a rebate to rising costs of living due to the new tax.

Significantly, the carbon tax compensation was much smaller than the stimulus cheques.
