Bright feathers inspire laser technology

A new kind of laser mimics the nanoscale structure of colourful feathers to make high-intensity laser light in almost any colour.

Drawing inspiration from the set-up of air pockets in the feathers of certain, brightly coloured birds, the researchers at Yale were able to enhance “light confinement”, thereby making lasers more efficient.
