Collaboration reveals complexities of human genome

Hundreds of scientists have collaborated to compile the Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE), a project that aims to describe the workings of the human genome.

The Yale University lab team have traced a regulatory network of half a million molecular interactions triggered by 119 transcription genes that can simultaneously activate or de-activate thousands of genes.

This finding has potential for future research, including establishing the relative genetic contribution of each parent and exploring fossil DNA.
