Designing out crime Sydney-style

Innovative design is being used to tackle crime in one of Sydney’s most notorious areas. King’s Cross is packed with 30,000 revellers every Friday and Saturday night, and was the location for 16% of all alcohol related assaults in 2008.

Now researchers at the University of Technology Sydney and the City of Sydney are working together on possible solutions. Already a minibus to shuttle people to after-hours public transport, improved lighting in laneways and temporary open-air urinals have been introduced, and that’s just the start.
