Developing a test for disease-carrying cows

Researchers are developing a test to eliminate hidden carriers of a significant disease in Australian cattle herds, known as Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD).

Disease-carrying cows can abort or have stillborn calves, or calves can be infected with the disease while still in the womb. These calves become persistently infected “carriers” which can never be cured and could go on to infect herd members.

The test will help to identify cows with infected foetuses, and be a very valuable tool in BVD control and eradication.
