Doctors have higher organ donation rate than public

Physicians are one-and-a-half-times more likely to register as organ donors than members of the general public, a new Canadian study finds.

Researchers consulted local databases comprising over 15,000 physicians, and found 43.3% - roughly 6,500 - were registered.

By comparison, only 23.9% of the general public were found to be registered, and only 29.5% of “matched citizens” - a group comprised of people with similar backgrounds and qualities as physicians.

The authors said future research was needed to establish whether the situation was similar in other countries.
