Climate phenomenon El Niño is stronger today than it has been over the last 175 years, according to research from the University of Wollongong.
While El Niño’s intensity has varied from decade to decade, researchers say the phenomenon remained at a lower baseline for nearly two centuries. They also determined its variability to be a systematic response to factors that drive global climate change.
The record of climate fluctuations was obtained from a 4,300 year old coral from Kiritimati (Christmas) Island.
