Epilepsy trigger found

A mechanism which causes healthy brain cells to transform into epileptic ones has been discovered by researchers from the University of California, Irvine and France.

The transformation is caused by a major cellular repressor called NRSF, which attaches to the DNA in genes and shuts them down, causing neurons to fire abnormally and promoting the development of epilepsy.

This discovery helps opens the way to potentially both treat and prevent epilepsy.
