Flat lenses could boost solar power

Micro-machining technology could be used to produce flat lenses which would boost the productivity of solar panels.

The Fresnel lens is essentially a two dimensional equivalent of the regular optical lens, but isn’t used frequently due to a reduction in image quality.

But using the Fresnel lens on solar panels can obtain much higher levels of peak power and reduce the overall costs of production.

This very simple addition to less efficient solar panels means they could be viable for places without the money or technology for brand new devices.
