Galaxies in groups running out of gas

Galaxies located in groups may be running out of gas, according to a new international study led by Swinburne University of Technology.

Galaxies possess large reservoirs of hydrogen gas, the fuel from which new stars are formed.

Using the highly sensitive Arecibo telescope, scientists measured the hydrogen content of a large number of galaxies in different environments – from isolated systems to large groups – which revealed that galaxies in groups have, on average, less gas and star formation than similar systems found in isolation.
