Geological features of the Great Rift Valley, birthplace of the human species, may be much older than previously believed.
Existing geological models of the Rift propose that a rapid tectonic uplift over the past few million years caused climatic and environmental changes which drove human evolution. New research, though, suggests the area has a much more prolonged history of tectonic activity, stretching back as far as 25–30 million years.
