A national research program coordinated by CSIRO will aid revision of guidelines to maximise the benefits and minimise the risks of applying biosolids and other organic wastes to land.
Biosolids are derived from the solid component of sewage effluent from wastewater treatment plants. Previously considered a waste product, rather than a resource, biosolids used to be dumped in landfills or pumped out to sea.
Research will provide a basis for the sustainable use of biosolids and organic wastes as fertilisers in agriculture throughout Australia.
