Head and body lice may be the same species

Compelling genetic evidence suggests that head and body lice are the same species.

The study compared the protein-coding genes of the lice. Body lice can transmit bacterial diseases, while head lice cannot. This difference has resulted in deliberation over whether or not the lice are the same species.

The researchers hope that the results will improve their understanding of how human diseases are transmitted.
