Headphones detect which ear they are in

Headphones that detect which ear they are in and play the associated audio have been developed by researchers at the University of Tokyo.

By using proximity sensors and discharging a weak electrical charge, the headphones can also sense if the headphones are being shared, and will play identical mono audio streams as necessary.

The researchers took inspiration from the sensor smart phones utilise for turning on or off the display.
