Marriages where only one spouse drinks heavily are more likely to end in divorce compared to couples who drink together or not at all.
The research found almost 50% of couples where only one parter drank to intoxication ended up in divorce within the first nine years of marriage, while the same fate was only experienced by 30% of other couples.
Couples who were both heavy drinkers were no more likely to divorce than those who didn’t drink, which suggests the habit may create a greater level of tolerance for drunken behaviour.
