Introducing Kairuku, the giant prehistoric penguin

Paleontologists have created a model of a prehistoric penguin that stood nearly 1.5 metres tall, based on fossilised bones found in 1977.

The giant penguin species, named Kairuku (Maori for “diver who returns with food”), would have been the largest of the five species to have lived in New Zealand during the Oligocene period.
