Man-made mini human brains

In a world first, Austrian researchers have grown human stem cells to form pea-sized amounts of brain tissue that replicated human brain development - including regions such as the cerebral cortex.

The mini-brains are not capable of consciousness, but it is hoped they might help researchers better understand how human brains are formed.

The mini-brains might also help scientists better understand brain diseases that have been difficult to examine in mice.
