Artificial light pollution from coastal development and urban settings can increase mortality in Australian marine turtles, according to scientists from James Cook University.
Hatchlings become disorientated when exposed to artificial light as they attempt to navigate down the beach and into the water.
The scientists found four of the six species of Australian marine turtles were affected across much of their nesting habitat in the North West shelf of Western Australia and South East Queensland.
