Men more likely to survive shipwrecks

Men have almost double the chance of surviving a shipwreck compared to women, a new study has found.

Economists from Uppsala University in Sweden have studied 18 of the most famous maritime disasters recorded since 1852. In all but two cases, more men than women survived.

The study challenges popular conceptions of male chivalry at sea, and finds that survival instincts are the predominant influence on evacuation procedures.
