The Adelaide Hills, the Barossa Valley, Mount Barker and McLaren Vale should be granted UNESCO World Heritage listing, according to researchers.
The Mount Lofty Ranges possess unique qualities as a working agricultural region, like similar regions in Italy, Portugal, Hungary and Mexico, which are all UNESCO listed sites.
Agricultural economists say the move would not only protect the environment, but also be a draw card for the food, wine and tourism industries.
