Nano-structures release new energy potential

Hydrogen can be released and reabsorbed from nano-structured storage material, overcoming a major hurdle to its use as an alternative fuel source.

By synthesising nanoparticles and encasing the chemical compound inside nickel shells, the “core-shell” nanostructure demonstrated hydrogen storage properties, including the release of energy at much lower temperatures than previously observed.

New materials that could be generated by this strategy could provide practical solutions to meet many of the energy targets set by the US Department of Energy.
