Natural birth triggers expression of key protein in brain

The expression of an important protein in the brain is impaired in offspring born by caesarean section.

A study on the effect of natural and surgical birth on the protein UCP in mice, found its expression was diminished in the brains of offspring delivered via caesarean.

The researchers found that natural birth triggers the expression of the protein, which is important to brain development and function, particularly with short-term and long-term memory.

These findings may also have previously unknown and lasting effects on the brain in humans.
