New plant species found a long way from home

A new sword-sedge plant species from the alpine regions of Tasmania has been identified at the University of New England.

Researchers made the unexpected discovery - Tasmanian plant species were thought to be comprehensively documented - in sample loaned to the UNE herbarium.

After the initial find in the lab, researchers set out to find the previously unidentified specimen in the wild. Surprisingly, they found the sedge “appeared to be everywhere”.
