Research into tyre recycling has found a environmentally friendly and cost-effective solution.
New technology developed by researchers can turn old tyres into high quality ingredients for manufacturing by segmenting the tyre so each section can be treated differently, eliminating impurities.
“What we have developed is a significant breakthrough in tyre recycling that is superior to the current practices of shredding and burying tyres in landfill, burning tyres or recycling them into low quality materials of limited use,” explained Deakin research engineer Chris Skourtis.
Only a small amount of the 20 million tyres disposed of in Australia each year are recycled.
