Newly discovered protein protects against influenza

A new protein that protects against viral infections such as influenza has been discovered.

Researchers investigated the defensive devices within T-cells on exposed body surfaces such as skin and found they contain the protein IFITM3, which makes them more resistant to viral infections.

Research will now look at how to increase the number and longevity of T-cells expressing IFITM3, which could lead to improved vaccines that promote generation of more resistant T-cells.
