Osteoporosis increases after 50

Around 6% of Australian men and 23% of women over 50 suffer from osteoporosis, according to a Deakin University study.

The study of 3,000 men and women aged 20 to 97 found Australians over 50 often suffered from low levels of bone mineral density.

“There is definitely an age-related increase in the prevalence of osteoporosis in both men and women,” study co-author Associate Professor Mark Kotowicz said.

The researchers found high rates of osteoporosis in the over 80 age group.
