Vertical farms is one possible way of meeting the challenges of urbanisation and the rising demand for food. The farms are built as vertically stacked layers in unlikely places – from skyscrapers to warehouses and containers. Esther Ndumi Ngumbi, a post-doctoral researcher and food security fellow, explains how they’re being used to great effect around the world. And why they could work in Africa.
