Paying to thwart criminals

Americans are prepared to pay USD$87 to fund a government-sponsored identity theft program, according to a study conducted by a team from Florida State University. Criminologists in four US states canvassed opinions on a hypothetical scheme which promised to reduce identity theft by up to 75%. The average victim of the crime loses between USD$2,800 and $5,100.
