Peeing in pools: disgusting and unhealthy

While peeing in a pool may be disgusting, it might also cause health problems in swimmers, new research shows.

Researchers collected pool water from across China, and mixed it with compounds that mimicked urine and sweat.

The study found that chlorine, used to disinfect pools, reacts with urea – a compound present in urine and to a lesser degree in sweat. The reaction produces byproducts that change water chemistry and air quality around the pool area.

The byproducts can lead to a number of health problems, including reduced lung function.
