Plastic pollution creates new oceanic microbe ecosystem

Scientists have discovered a new underwater world of microbes: a “plastisphere”, thriving and colonising on plastics skimming the ocean floor.

The study examined discarded plastic residing at several points across the North Atlantic ocean floor, noting the human made ecosystem.

The discovery raises questions about the ecological structures and the expected environmental changes.
