Probiotics don’t ease infant colic

Probiotics are ineffective in treating colic in babies. The findings of this large study differ from the results of smaller ones.

Dr Valerie Sung conducted a trial looking at whether the probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri could ease the symptoms of colic in babies aged three months and younger. They compared the results with babies given drops containing no active ingredient. The probiotics offered no benefit.

The researchers also found that probiotics did not increase healthy gut bacteria and some babies given probiotics fussed more.
