Associate Professor, University of Exeter

I am Associate Professor of Political Philosophy at the University of Exeter in the UK. My main research and teaching interests are in the history of modern liberal thought, its relationship to contemporary political philosophy and the methodological questions involved in interpreting past ideas.

I have held visiting fellowships at UC Berkeley (Center for British Studies, Autumn 2007), the University of St. Andrews (Centre for Ethics, Philosophy and Public Affairs, Spring 2010) and the University of Sydney (Institute for Democracy and Human Rights, Spring 2013).

I am the author of 'Thomas Paine and the Idea of Human Rights' (Cambridge University Press, 2015), co-editor of 'Selected Political Writings of John Thelwall' (Pickering & Chatto, 2009) and my work has been published in various international journals, including The Journal of Politics, The Review of Politics, History of Political Thought, Journal of the History of Ideas and Law and Philosophy.

I am an Associate of the Sydney Democracy Network at the University of Sydney.
