Ala'a Shehabi is an economist by training, social policy consultant and has been a lecturer for many years.

She is the Deputy Director of the Institute for Global Prosperity at UCL, which conducts trans-disciplinary research into what constitutes a good life and prosperity beyond growth (originally termed by Professor Tim Jackson). Her research focuses on generative methods of centring people and the planet in economic development, particularly in the Middle East. This research is funded by UKRI.

She has a PhD in econometrics from Imperial College London and previously worked for the RAND Corporation and Lancaster University.
