Dr Alex Oaten is a Teaching Fellow in Political Science in the Department of Political Science and International Studies, University of Birmingham. He has multi-disciplinary interests in the areas of far right populism, political identities, discourse analysis and British politics. He has taught on a variety of political science modules during his time at Birmingham. Alex has published research on the English Defence League and also on the discourse of modernisation within mainstream political parties. Alex has also spent time conducting ethnographic research on the British far right. His current research projects involve analysing the history of UK immigration control and a theoretical exposition of contemporary populism within Western Europe and North America.
