Senior Research Fellow in Law, Middlesex University

I previously worked as a commissioner, editor and broadcast journalist with the BBC World Service (1991-2005). I was an Associate of Global Partners and Associates from 2007-10, and Senior Research Fellow at London Metropolitan University from 2010-12.

My interests lie in the socio-legal study of human rights, in the following areas:

– implementation and impact of human rights, especially in public service delivery
– human rights in the UK and Europe
– concepts of democratic legitimacy
– religion or belief
– human rights, poverty and inequality

Currently (2013-14) leading a scoping study funded by the Thomas Paine Initiative on 'Identifying Human Rights Stories', as part of a wider initiative to improve communication about human rights in the UK.

I have been principal investigator or co-investigator on research projects funded by the Nuffield Foundation; the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Equality and Human Rights Commission.
