Personal chair in cognitive computation, University of Stirling

Professor Hussain obtained his BEng (with the highest 1st Class Honours with distinction) and PhD in Electronic and Electrical Engineering (EEE) from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, in 1992 and 1997 respectively. His PhD Thesis was titled: “Novel Artificial Neural Network Architectures & Algorithms for Signal Processing & Communications Applications”. The EEE Dept at Strathclyde is the largest of its kind in the UK. It is also the highest rated EEE Dept in Scotland and one of the two EEE departments in the UK in the top 5 of the UK Guardian University guide for both research and teaching.

Following a post-doctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Paisley (1996-98) and a Research Lectureship at the University of Dundee (1998-2000), he joined the University of Stirling in 2000, where he is currently full Professor of Cognitive Computing Science and founding Director of the Cognitive Signal-Image Processing and Control Systems Research (COSIPRA) Laboratory. The University of Stirling has been ranked in the world’s top 50 Universities by The Times Higher Education “Top 100 Under 50 year old Universities” (2012). Stirling’s Computing Science Department has been ranked 10th in the UK in the Guardian Newspaper’s UK University League Table (2011).

Professor Hussain has (co)authored/edited more than ten Books and over 230 papers to-date in leading international journals and refereed Conference proceedings. Since 2000, he has generated over $2m in research income as principal investigator, including from UK research councils, EU FP6/7, international charities and industry. He is founding Editor-in-Chief of both Springer’s Cognitive Computation journal and the Springer Book Series: SpringerBriefs in Cognitive Computation and Socio-Affective Computing, Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks & Learning Systems (one of the world’s top journals in its field) and serves on the Editorial Board of a number of other distinguished journals. He has served as Invited Speaker / General (co)Chair / Member of Organizing Committees for over 50 International Conferences, including, amongst others: the world’s top IEEE World Congress on Computational Intelligence (WCCI’2014), International Joint Conference on Neural Networks (IJCNN 2013-15), and IEEE Symposium Series on Computational Intelligence (SSCI’2013-15) - flagship Conferences of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society; ICONIP’2012-13 and ICANN’2007-14 – the world’s premier annual conferences on neural networks. He is Chair of the IEEE UK & Republic of Ireland (RI) Industry Applications Society Chapter, Publications Chair of the International Neural Networks Society (INNS) Big Data Chapter, and a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy (HEA).
