Calvin Schermerhorn

I am a historian of slavery, capitalism, and African American inequality, in the era of the US Civil War and Reconstruction. Professor of History at Arizona State University.In addition to a number of articles and essays, I have published three sole-authored books including _Unrequited Toil: A History of United States Slavery_(Cambridge, 2018), _The Business of Slavery and the Rise of American Capitalism, 1815-1860_(Yale, 2015), and _Money over Mastery, Family over Freedom: Slavery in the Antebellum Upper South_(Johns Hopkins, 2011). Much of my energies are focused on teaching, including online and in-person courses on American and global history at ASU, where I advise honors, masters, and doctoral students.
