Calvin Schermerhorn

I am a historian of slavery, capitalism, and African American inequality, currently Professor of History at Arizona State University and Associate Director for Undergraduate Studies in the School of Historical, Philosophical, and Religious Studies.In addition to a number of articles and essays, I have published three sole-authored books including _Unrequited Toil: A History of United States Slavery_(Cambridge, 2018), _The Business of Slavery and the Rise of American Capitalism, 1815-1860_(Yale, 2015), and _Money over Mastery, Family over Freedom: Slavery in the Antebellum Upper South_(Johns Hopkins, 2011). Much of my energies are focused on teaching, including online and in-person courses on American and global history at ASU, where I advise honors, masters, and doctoral students.
