Carolina Are

(she/her)

Dr Carolina Are is a platform governance researcher, writer, blogger, activist currently based at Northumbria University, where she is working as an Innovation Fellow at the Centre for Digital Citizens. Her research sits at the intersection of online abuse and censorship of nudity, sexuality and bodies. Dr Are's experiences of de-platforming as a pole dance instructor and content creator greatly inform her research approach and practice, as she comes to the study of content moderation from the perspective of a practitioner - in this case, a creator, activist and a former gig worker. Before retraining as an academic, Dr Are was a PR account director and social media strategist with six years of experience in both London and Sydney.
