Caroline Skinner

Senior researcher at the African Centre for Cities, University of Cape Town

Caroline Skinner is a Senior Researcher at the African Centre for Cities (ACC) at the University of Cape Town and Urban Research Director for the global action-research-policy network Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing (WIEGO). For over two decades Caroline’s work has interrogated the informal economy and processes of informality. This is with a view to, not only generate new knowledge, but inform advocacy processes; livelihood-centred policy and planning responses and better equip current and future urban practitioners to engage with ‘informality’. She has published widely on the topic. Skinner has a long track record of policy and advocacy work at a local, provincial, national and international level. She has written policy papers for the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, the United Nations Development Programme and the World Bank. She also provides technical support for membership-based organization advocacy campaigns both internationally and in South Africa.
