Catalin Popa

Catalin Popa is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Faculty of Archaeology. His main research focusses on landscape perception, statistical modelling, past and present identity and ethnicity, as well as the relationship between archaeology and nationalism. Much of his research has been connected with the Iron Age of Europe, particularly the area of the Northern Balkans.

Following the completion of his PhD at the University of Cambridge in 2014, Catalin was awarded a Dahlem Research School Postdoctoral Fellowship, as part of the Excellence Cluster TOPOI, at the Freie Universität Berlin. Between 2014 and 2016 he conducted his research in Berlin on the relationship between humans and environment.

Currently Catalin is part of the Economy of Destruction project, where he is tasked with developing landscape models that can forward our understandings of why certain places where chosen for the deposition of bronze objects in Northwest Europe from 2300-1500BC.
