Cherrel Jane Africa

Professor of Political Studies, University of the Western Cape

Cherrel Africa is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Studies at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). Prof Africa was the Head of the Department of Political Studies from April 2012 to December 2015. She is currently the Deputy Dean of Teaching and Learning in the Economic and Management Sciences Faculty. Prof Africa holds a PhD in South African politics from the University of Cape Town. She worked at the Institute for Democracy in South Africa from 1995 to 2003. Prof Africa has a wide range of interests, including voting behaviour, elections and election campaigns. She specializes in research methodology and design, with a particular emphasis on public opinion and survey research. Since 1999 she has served as an election analyst for both the SABC and E-tv/ENCA and worked closely with the Election Monitoring Network (EMN) in monitoring the 2011 local government election. She currently serves on the council of the South African Association of Political Studies (SAAPS) and the editorial board of the African Journal of Elections.
