Honorary Professor Human Resource Development, Glasgow Caledonian University

David is an Honorary Professor at Glasgow Caledonian University, having been initially appointed in 2017. In 2020, he was appointed by Sir John Saunders, Chairman of the Manchester Arena Public Inquiry, as a Security Subject Matter Expert, and provided evidence to the Inquiry. He has also spoken at a number of events on the current Protect Duty, which is being considered by the UK Government.

He previously spent 39 years in law enforcement,12 of these in counter terrorism protective security. His area of specialism is insider threat, with a focus on aviation, and he has spoken internationally on the subject. He was also responsible for developing an interactive insider threat exercising programme for the UK emergency services. David was also previously a member of the Airpol Insider Threat Group and worked with the Interpol CBRNE Terrorism Prevention Unit to develop an insider threat programme.

David completed a First-Class Honours degree with the Open University and a Master’s Degree in Human Resource Management at Glasgow Caledonian University. He was awarded a PhD at Glasgow University in 2012, which related to the protection of Critical National Infrastructure against the threat from terrorism, and was then subsequently seconded to the Scottish Government on a part time basis for an EU funded Project – Miracle, relating to the development of EU regional Critical Infrastructure Protection & Resilience strategies.

David was also engaged in joint research with Glasgow Caledonian University & the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI) regarding the development of a Personnel Security/insider threat training and educational programme for HRM professionals.

He is a Chartered Security Professional (CSyP), Fellow of the Security Institute (FSyI), Chartered Member of the CIPD (Chartered MCIPD), Member of the Chartered Management Institute (MCMI), Chartered Manager (CMgr) and a Fellow of the Institute for Contingency Planning and Emergency Management (FICPEM).
