I am a criminologist who studies issues related to gangs and criminal networks, crime trends and violence, and incarceration and reentry. I received the BS and MS in Criminology from California State University, Fresno and the PhD in Criminology and Criminal Justice from Arizona State University. I am the author of Confronting Gangs: Crime and Community (Oxford), the Handbook of Gangs (Wiley-Blackwell), and Competing for Control: Gangs and the Social Order of Prisons (Cambridge). I have written opinion editorials for outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Crime Report, and The Conversation.
