David R. Gallagher was the inaugural Malcolm Broomhead Chair in Finance at The University of Queensland Business School. At year-end December 2018 he retired from academia after 20 years service and returned to the financial services industry in Sydney.
He is a former Chief Executive Officer of the $41 Million Centre of Excellence in International Finance and Regulation (CIFR). CIFR operated from 2011-2016 and was funded by the Commonwealth Government of Australia, the New South Wales Government, and a consortium of six universities. The Centre also worked closely with Australia's cornerstone financial regulators.
Dr Gallagher's prior academic roles included professorial appointments at UNSW Business School, UTS, Macquarie University's Graduate School of Management (MGSM) and a visiting appointment at The University of Texas at Austin, in the United States.
Dr Gallagher graduated from The University of Sydney with a Ph.D. in Finance. Before this he was a postgraduate student, had a professional career as a Financial Analyst at Towers Perrin Inc., an actuarial and investment consulting firm (now known as Willis Towers Watson).
His research interests and expertise are in the fields of investment management, institutional investors, financial regulation, superannuation and capital markets.
He has published several opinion pieces in a variety of financial media and has appeared on television and radio as a commentator. He has consulted widely to industry and Government, and has served as an expert witness on legal matters.
